I am delighted to welcome the Sarawak Alumni of the University of Adelaide into our "family" of alumni chapters. The establishment of the new chapter - the fifth in the University's international alumni network - marks the formalisation of a friendship that has endured for more than half a century. It provides a strong foundation on which to develop our relationship and ensure that it continues to flourish for many more years to come. Malaysia has the distinction of becoming the first country to host two alumni chapters of the University of Adelaide. This is fitting, given the University's long tradition of welcoming Malaysian students, who today make up the single biggest group in Adelaide's international student community. I am pleased that the Sarawak Alumni has such an excellent working relationship with the Adelaide University Alumni Malaysia Bhd in Kuala Lumpur. This will enable both chapters to support one another and further strengthen the alumni network in Malaysia. Some of the University of Adelaide's most distinguished graduates are based in Sarawak. Politically, economically, and scientifically they have made an enormous contribution to the betterment of Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole. In so doing, they have brought great honour to their alma mater. It is immensely gratifying for me, as Vice-Chancellor, to witness the respect and affection that you, our graduates, have retained for the University of Adelaide over so many years. The University is particularly honoured that the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, has agreed to be inaugural president of the new chapter. The support of such an eminent and admired alumnus is, indeed, an auspicious start. I commend everyone who has been involved in establishing the Sarawak Alumni. On behalf of the University of Adelaide, I pledge our full support for your endeavours and look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with you in the years to come.
