KUCHING: The establishment of the Sarawak Alumni of the University of Adelaide (SAUA) marks the formalisation of a friendship between Sarawak graduates and the varsity that has endured for over half a century. Emeritus senior deputy chancellor of the University of Adelaide Dr Harry Medlin said it provided a strong foundation on which to develop the relationship. "I hope it continues to flourish for many more years to come," he said on behalf of University of Adelaide vice-chancellor Prof CD Blake at the launching of the Sarawak chapter of the University of Adelaide's Alumni Association at Holiday Inn Damai Lagoon Resort in Santubong near here on Saturday. Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Dato Sri Adenan Satem, who is also SAUA deputy president, officiated at the launching on behalf of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud. In endorsing the fifth international chapter of the University of Adelaide's Alumni Association, Medlin highlighted some of the varsity's past graduates who had made an impact on the academia world. His speech shadowed Blake's souvenir message that the university's more distinguishable graduates had made `enormous contribution' to the betterment of communities. "In doing so, they have brought great honour to their alma mater," he said.
Blake said SAUA has an excellent working relationship with the Adelaide University Alumni Malaysia Bhd in Kuala Lumpur which would enable both chapters to support each other and further strengthen the alumni network in Malaysia.
