KUCHING - Graduates of Australian universities have been urged to join the forthcoming Australian Universities International Alumni Convention 2002 (AUIAC 2002) which will be held in Melbourne, Australia from 5 to 7 September this year.

Making the call on Saturday night, Agriculture & Food Industries Minister, Dato Sri Adenan Haji Satem said that local Australian graduates should support the convention as "it would not be nice for Sarawak not to send a few hundred graduates to attend." He added: "Melbourne is a beautiful place with nice weather. Show your support and don't be left behind. My wife and I will be going and I will try to bring along a few others. I understand our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife are also going."

Adenan said that the topics to be presented by renowned speakers would also be relevant to the Twenty First Century. "So spread the word around, take the opportunity to go. Consider it a holiday as special air fare rates are being arranged,"he said, adding that the theme of the convention would be "Networking in the Knowledge Economy."

Earlier on, the organising chairman of the convention, the Honourable John Button said that the event was an opportunity for graduates to get together and have a fun time and to renew friendships and associations. "The AUIAC 2002 is another important step in the development of the international alumni which was started by your very own Chief Minister in 1998. He will close the AUIAC 2002 and hand over the flag for the AUIAC 2004 which will be held in Hong Kong," Button revealed at a dinner hosted by the Sarawak Australian Graduates Association (SAGA) and the Sarawak Alumni of the University of Adelaide (SAUA).

Both SAGA and SAUA will be sending a team of at least 50 alumni each to the convention. Meanwhile, those interested to join can contact Roger Chan at 483888/346712 or e-mail: rodger@netinc.net.my or the website: http://www.saga.net.my. The website for AUIAC 2002 is :  http://www.auiac.2002.com.
