Taib leads Adelaide University alumni

KUCHING: Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud is the inaugural president of the recently established Sarawak Alumni of the University of Adelaide (SAUA). The Chief Minister graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1960 with a law degree and later received a Doctor of the University from the same university.

Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Dato Sri Adenan Satem, the deputy president of the association, is also a law graduate of the same university. He graduated in 1969. Recently, Taib chaired a meeting of the SAUA executive committee. Among the items discussed are the launching ceremony of the association and its activities.

The association has been approved recently by the University of Adelaide to become the fifth international chapter of the university's alumni association. The other international chapters are London, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Among the activities planned for SAUA members are the official launching in July, annual general meeting cum gathering at the Chief Minister's residence in August, Australian Universities International Alumni Convention in Melbourne in September, Homecoming in Adelaide in September, an Australian school concert dinner in December and an Australian host family programme in December.

Other prominent alumni who served in the executive committee are Jacob Dungau Sagan (Baram Member of Parliament), Dato Sri Joseph Kong (Public Service Commission deputy chairman), Datuk James Ting (ex-general manager of Shell Sarawak) and Henry Lau (KTS Group of Companies managing director). Graduates of the University of Adelaide have been urged to come forward and join as members of the association.
