KUCHING: The recently formed Adelaide Alumni Association - Sarawak Alumni of the University of Adelaide (SAUA) - is headed "by the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud. Taib graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1960 with a law degree and later received a Doctorate from the same university.

Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Sri Adenan Haji Satem is the deputy president of the association. Adenan graduated with a law degree from the university in 1969 Recently, Taib chaired a meeting of the SAUA Executive Committee.

Among the items discussed were the launching of SAUA and its activities. The association has been approved recently by the University of Adelaide to become the fifth international chapter of the University's Alumni Association. The other international chapters are in London, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Activities planned by SAUA include the launching ceremony in July, AGM and gatherings in August, Australian Universities International Alumni Convention in Melbourne in September, Homecoming in Adelaide in September, an Australian School Concert Dinner in December and an Australian Host Family Programme also in December.

Among those in the SAUA Executive Committee are Jacob Dungau Sagan (Member of Parliament), Datuk Sri Joseph Kong (Deputy Chairman of the Public Services Commission) and Datuk James Ting (former General Manager of Sarawak Shell). Rodger Chan, an architecture graduate, who also studied Information Technology at the University, is the Honorary Secretary of SAUA. Chan is also the President of the Sarawak Australian Graduates Association (SAGA).

The fact that the Chief Minister is the inaugural president of SAUA further demonstrates his commitment to the University and its alumni and this was reported in the recent issue of the University's official newspaper, the Adelaidean.

Meanwhile, Chan has called on graduates of the University of Adelaide to come forward and join as members of the association. SAUA can be contacted at 082-346712 or 082-483888 (Ms Fong) or via email: rodgerc@netinc.net.my.
