Four Malaysians held in Australia for visa offence

MELBOURNE: Four Malaysians are among 88 people detained in Sydney over the past week for being in Australia illegally or in breach of visa conditions.

A statement from the Immigration Department said of the 59 men and 29 women detained since Friday, Jan 31, 74 were in Australia unlawfully and the remaining 14 were found to have breached their visa conditions.

Many were also believed to have been working illegally, the statement said.

Others detained included 24 Indonesians, 24 Chinese nationals, nine South Koreans and seven Thai nationals.

Three people each were from India and the Philippines, two each from Nepal, Fiji, Ireland and Britain, and one each from Bangladesh, Taiwan, Mongolia,Singapore, Iran and the United States.

All 88 people have been detained at the Villawood Immigration Centre where they will remain while arrangements are made for their departure from Australia.

Warning notices have also been issued to the employers or labour suppliers found to have engaged illegal workers, the statement said. - Bernama
