MELBOURNE: Malaysia's YTL Corporation has signed a joint venture agreement with the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM) in Adelaide.

Datuk Mark Yeoh Seok Kah, executive director responsible for YTL's Hotels and Resorts Division, flew to Adelaide from Kuala Lumpur for the signing, which took place at the Adelaide Town Hall on Tuesday.

YTL Corporation is part of the YTL group, one of Malaysia's leading integrated infrastructure conglomerates.

The group is owner and developer of prime hotels and resorts in the region, including the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton Hotels in Kuala Lumpur, the Vistana chain and major resorts in Malaysia, including the exclusive Pangkor Laut and Tanjung Jara. It is also the major investor in the Eastern and Oriental Express.

Under the agreement, YTL ham licence to deliver the first two years of the ICHM program in Malaysia. Students who wish to continue for a third year and complete the Swiss Hotel Association International Hotel Management Diploma, will do so in Adelaide at the college's Regency Park campus.

They can also go on to the ICHM degree on campus or on-line. ICHM has similar successful arrangements in place in South Africa, Japan, Taiwan and China.

According to ICHM chief executive, Gerald Lipman, as a result of these agreements ICHM has more students studying offshore than in Australia. "On campus in Adelaide we can boast full enrolment, with around 80 percent of our students coming from overseas, including North and South America, Europe, Canada and Asia.

Lipman said that with its joint venture agreements, such as with YTL, ICHM looks beyond purely financial return to the flow-on benefits for ICHM and its students and graduates. - Bernama
